Envisioning Academic Excellence in the 21st Century...Community Forum Summary
On May 19, New Albany for Kids hosted a community forum entitled “Envisioning Academic Excellence In The 21st Century.” We are very grateful that approximately 60 area residents came out to participate. We believe that constructive community dialogue is essential for addressing the concerns, challenges, and opportunities that we face together. Several participants have expressed their appreciation not only for the chance to share opinions, but the opportunity to hear ideas – sometimes even opposing ideas – from other people.

We have shared this information with the Board of Education and Administration. (Click here to see a copy of the presentation.) We urge our school district leadership to embrace the community’s input and to seek additional community engagement.

New Albany for Kids Hosts Community Forum on Early Childhood Education During the summer of 2009, the Ohio legislature passed a bill, referred to as HB1, with both education reform and funding impacts. While HB1 has many implications for education reform and funding, one change with a potentially large and immediate impact on our community is the requirement for school districts to offer all-day kindergarten. Interestingly, while the new law requires districts to offer an all-day program, the plan enables parents to choose not to send their children to all-day kindergarten. In order to help our community understand and address the issues of both curriculum and funding, New Albany for Kids hosted a community forum on early childhood education, with an emphasis on the issues surrounding all day kindergarten. We were pleased to have Dr. Jane Wiechel as one of the featured presenters discussing the range of issues faced in considering early childhood education and development.
